AI in education: from consumption to learner agency

Artificial intelligence is already in schools and universities. The useful question is no longer whether learners will use it, but how. Jody Britten, Ph.D. studies that question and shares what she finds here.

The Range of AI Use

Generative AI in education can leave learners as passive consumers of answers, or it can extend what they are able to do. Jody describes this as a range of AI use. At one end, people receive output. Further along, they create, investigate, model, question and apply.

Where a classroom, school or system sits on that range matters more than which tools it has adopted. It is also where policy, professional learning and evidence come together, which is why AI readiness is an organizational design problem and not a technology adoption problem.
